Domestic Violence Fact Sheet by Sue Jones

Domestic violence occurs when the power balance in an intimate relationship is offset by one partner’s desire to control the other. The power is usually achieved through abuse. The abuse can be physical, verbal, psychological, or even economical. Dating violence doesn't necessarily have to be carried out, domestic violence can also occur as a result of threats of abuse. If the threats serve to influence the partner, then the relationship can be deemed abusive.

According to different polls, domestic violence is a common occurrence. A survey conducted by the Allstate Foundation found 75 percent of those polled knew a victim of domestic violence and a CDC survey found 25 percent of women and 11 percent of men are victims of domestic violence. Even more freighting is the statistics on the National Domestic Violence Hotline website that state that “On the average, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends every day.”

Non Profit Organizations

The National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH) should be one of the first stops for information. The website offers advice to friends and family of an abuse victim and important information about using the internet safely to get help and support. NDVH also has a comprehensive list of downloadable resources and booklets. Victims are encouraged to call the hot line at 1-800-799-SAFE.

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence Website seeks to unite communities to work towards ending domestic violence. The goals of the coalition are to eliminate domestic violence, empower victims, educate the public, and promote partnerships. Among the resources the coalition offers is Cosmetic and Reconstructive Support which acts through a couple of programs designed to assist domestic violence victims to get dentistry, cosmetic, and reconstructive surgery to repair incurred injuries.

National Center for Children Exposed to Violence seeks to raise public awareness to the effects of domestic violence on children.

Government Agencies

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Intimate Partner Violence Prevention site offers information of understanding this type of abuse. The website includes a guide on what the CDC is doing to prevent domestic violence and violence against women. The CDC website also contains comprehensive statistical information about groups at risk.

The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance offers comprehensive resources that include programs that offer financial and non financial assistance by various departments in the US Government.

The US Department Of Agriculture’s Safety, Health and Employee Division issues a handbook dedicated to "stopping the cycle of violence."
